Find out the coolest Oscars nail designs
Every year, the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles hosts the most significant award ceremony for those working in the movie industry. The famous 24-carat gold-plated bronze statuette is the most coveted trophy for the stars of the silver screen; even 'just' a nomination on this night is a huge achievement. Given the importance of the event, Hollywood's most iconic VIPs rely on the best stylists, hair and make-up artists and manicurists in the business. Absolutely nothing can be left to chance, especially the hands that hold the statuette most desired by every actor and actress. Find out which were the most photographed Oscar 2023 manicures of the night!
RED CARPET NOT SO RED
We, like everyone else, expected more from this evening. Hollywood events are famous for bright colours, sparingly used glitter, dazzling lights and improbable patterns that arouse amazement and make people talk for days. However, this edition was so restrained that not even the red carpet was red... the film stars paraded on a beige carpet! Needless to say, general disappointment ran rampant, leaving photographers and journalists a little bored. However, the great film divas had to adapt their looks to this edition's choices, softening the tones of their gowns. Unfortunately, there were no sequins and colours to brighten up the evening, with the exception of international supermodel Cara Delevigne, who livened up the awards ceremony by appearing in a magnificent red dress and long almond-shaped nails with rhinestones applied.
The protagonists of this 95th edition from the champagne-coloured catwalk were the timeless black and white, a rather obvious combination. The expression on all present was the same as Miranda Priestley's in 'The Devil Wears Prada' when, following a banal proposal from her team, she arched her eyebrow, saying ironically, 'Floral for spring? Groundbreaking'.
Big Wow and big No on the catwalk
The organisers of the event justified their dress code choice by saying that their intention was to bring 'good taste' back onto the catwalk, a rather weak excuse since sophistication in no way implies renouncing bright colours, shiny jewellery and elaborate hairstyles. However, the Los Angeles VIPs were able to adapt with class, with the exception of Sigourney Weaver, whose stylist dressed her in a gold sequin gown that did not do her justice.
The splendid Halle Berry, Michelle Yeoh, Ana de Armas, Zoe Saldana and Jamie Lee Curtis triumphed in white. All stunning, beautiful and enviable to say the least, they nevertheless looked like an army of brides. Even the very blonde actress Michelle Williams, icon of the famous Lassie film, had a sort of white veil-mantle slipping over her shoulders. We only forgive her stylist's choice for making her neck sparkle with a sumptuous Tiffany & Co necklace that was nothing short of sparkling.
We know that there is no white without black, good without evil, yang without ying. So, while on the one hand we have the paladins of white, on the other we find the exponents of total black. Vanessa Hudgens opted for a vintage black & white by Chanel, completing the outfit with a two-coloured manicure that played down the dress.
The only barely noticeable transparencies were those of Lady Gaga and Rihanna, nothing out of the ordinary compared to the excess and extravagance of their stage dresses to which the two pop stars have accustomed us over the years. Rihanna, after her enormous success at the opening of 2023 Super Bowl, temporarily set aside red, keeping it only on her lips and nails. For the opening of the ceremony she wore a veil and leather dress by Alaïa, proudly showing the baby bump of her second pregnancy. For the performance of the song Lift Me Up, soundtrack of the film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, she gave us some sparkle and panache with a Margiela Artisanal dress, lighting up the evening by giving a little rock touch to the award ceremony.
Common to both white and black fans were the nails. The most viewed and photographed manicure of the event were Disco Nails, a style first launched by Tom Bachik. The manicurist first created this nail art on Selena Gomez for the 2023 Golden Globes, creating a nude base by applying elegant luminous rhinestones on the nail surface. During the 95th edition of the most awaited night in the movie industry, this look was literally on the hands of numerous divas. The stars of the silver screen took the opportunity of this (too) sober edition to show off their simple yet striking nail art to light up the Oscars nail designs.
Other divas chose even more sober alternatives such as Lip Gloss Nails for Sofia Carson and Lady Gaga, nude nails or even a spring pink Cat Eye effect for Michelle Yeoh, a tendentially wintery look revisited in a chic key. Another must-have of the night was pearl effect and Chrome Nails, strictly in shades of white and pink.
In short, we all expected a touch more audacity from the looks, but we cannot deny that the eternal black & white couple never fails. We also hoped to the last to see Will Smith hand over the coveted statuette to the best leading actress of the year, as the rules state that it is the winner of the previous edition who does it. After last year's slap in the face, the Academy banned Will Smith from the awards ceremony for ten years, the actor being replaced by Jessica Chastain and Halle Berry. Too bad, it would have been a nice way to show that even Hollywood can forgive.
